The Irish Concrete Society invites applications from postgraduate students for awards from the Irish Concrete Society Travel Bursary. These awards are to be used in support of travel expenses incurred in furtherance of research on concrete. Preference will be given to applications for attendance at international conferences at which the student is presenting a paper on their research. Awards to undergraduate students may be made in exceptional circumstances.
All registered postgraduate students in the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland are eligible to apply but support will only be provided in furtherance of research studies on concrete technology or the use of concrete in the built environment. Full or partial funding may be applied for. Funds will be allocated in accordance with the merits of the case, resources available to the applicant from other sources and the balance of the Travel Bursary fund at the time of application. It is envisaged that up to €2000 will be available for allocation each year. Applications are invited at any time and allocations, if any, will be announced on a quarterly basis in January, April, July and October. Successful applicants will be advised of their budgeted allocation and may advance their travel plans accordingly. The bursary must be used within two years of budget allocation. Retrospective applications will not be considered.
Eligible expenses include air fares, public transport, conference fees, travel insurance (mandatory) and vouched accommodation and meal expenses. Reimbursement will be made on receipt of an expenses claim, supported by receipts, on return from the conference or study tour. Payment will be made up to the approved allocation.
Successful applicants are obliged to submit a satisfactory report on their use of the award. A copy of the presented paper, for example, together with evidence of conference attendance would form an appropriate report where applicable. The Society may also request that the paper be presented as part of a Society function.
Applications, which must be supported by the student’s supervisor or head of department, must be submitted on the Society’s application form, available from the Honorary Secretary or downloadable here
